The
Cadillac Cyclone which debuted in 1959 was one of the many US
concept cars at the time which took its inspiration from the
rapidly developing jet age.
The Cyclone was perhaps one of the vehicles which used this
aeronautical influence to the greatest degree. Although other
cars, especially the Firebird
range of concept cars from GM, took this theme to ridiculous
levels.
Up front it had a couple of jet fighter-like nose cones, and
at the rear were a pair of massive tail fins. The passengers
were protected from the elements by an aeroplane-like bubble
canopy.
To provide entry and exit the doors slid backwards while the
rear-hinged canopy section tilted upwards.
Power for the Cadillac Cyclone concept came from a 6.4 litre
V8 engine which produced 325 horsepower.
