Accelerator
Also
called a gas pedal, a foot-operated device that regulates
the amount of fuel and/or air reaching the engine's cylinders. It thus controls the engine's speed or RPM
(revolutions per minute). The name "accelerator" refers to
the fact that depressing the pedal causes the vehicle to gain
speed from rest, or, in some circumstances (such as on level
ground), from whatever speed at which the vehicle is presently
moving. However, because of friction and gravity, depressing
the accelerator does not always result in acceleration. An
obvious example of this is if the vehicle begins to climb
a hill.
