Air
Suspension
Air
suspension, also known as hydropneumatic suspension, is a
type of suspension system that, instead of coil springs or leaf springs, uses bellows-like units, containing
pressurized air, at each corner of the vehicle. Air suspension,
pioneered by Citroen in the 1950s, is well known for the high
level of ride comfort it provides.
Air suspension results in a smoother ride, because the natural
frequency of vibration of an air spring does not vary with
loading as it does with metal springs. Air springs can be
made very soft for the lightly loaded vehicles and the pressure
automatically increases to match any increase in weight.
Air suspension is often powered by an engine driven or electric
air pump or compressor. This pump pressurizes the air, using
compressed air as a spring.
