Alternative Fuel Vehicle

An alternative fuel vehicle is a vehicle that can run on alternative fuel or can be powered by any means other than gasoline or diesel fuel. Alternative fuel vehicles may be designed to run on more than one fuel source, as in the case of hybrid electric vehicles or flexible fuel vehicles, or a single source such as a battery (see electric vehicle), biodiesel, biogas, ethanol, propane, or hydrogen. Solar-powered vehicles also fall into this category. Concerns about the price and availability of petroleum products, and environmental issues have spurred efforts by governments and vehicle manufacturers in recent years to invest much more heavily in the development of alternatives to the gas- and diesel-powered car.
