Clearcoat
A
clearcoat is a transparent layer of paint or resin which is
applied, on the vast majority of new automobiles today, on
top of the colored layer of paint to protect it from scratches
and provide a highly reflective surface. A UV additive in
the clearcoat also helps protect the underlying pigmented
layer from fading in sunlight. A special type of clearcoat,
with an additive called flex agent, is used on components
that may deform, such as urethane bumbers, to prevent cracking.
