Coil
Spring

Coil springs are one of the main types of spring used in vehicle
suspension systems, the other being the leaf spring. Coil springs are now used almost universally
as the suspension springs on ordinary passenger cars. A coil
spring consists of a heavy-gauge steel wire that has been
wound in a cone or regular spiral, at constant or variable
rate, and, possibly, with a variable pitch spacing or thickness,
and also heat-treated to make it extra strong enough to support
the weight of a vehicle. It spring may be located between
the control arm and chassis, the axle and chassis, or around a MacPherson strut. The coil springs on a given
vehicle have an important influence on the ride and handling
characteristics.
Sports Springs
Sports springs are aftermarket coil springs which can be used
to reduce the rideheight of a vehicle and firm up the suspension.
Sports springs are basically the cheap option for giving a
vehicle a sporty look when compared to a coilover kit.
Changing a vehicles springs, while retaining the same dampers,
can result in unusual ride characteristics due to the mismatched
spring/damping rates.
