Cooling
fins
Cooling
fins can be found on many engines, transmissions and other components
which carry considerable heat. They act as a passive cooling device,
conducting heat away from the main bulk of the metal and then using
the increased surface area created by the fins to cool the component
with passing air. Most effective when air is moving rapidly over
and through the fins, like when in motion and in the open air, cooling
fins are most often seen on exposed air-cooled motorcycle engines.
