Cylinder
block
The
cylinder block of an engine is a machined casting, or sometimes
an assembly of modules, which houses cylindrically bored holes (oval
holes on some vehicles, see Honda
NR750) for the pistons of an internal combustion engine. The
cylinder block is usually the largest single component of the engine,
and has mounting points where the various other parts of the engine,
like the cylinder head, crankcase and engine ancillaries can be
attached. It also has mounting points for the engine mounts to attach
it to the vehicles frame, and internal passages for coolant and
lubricants to pass through.
