Dashboard
The dashboard, also known as the dash, is a term used more
or less interchangeably with the more modern term, instrument
panel. In very early cars, the dashboard consisted simply
of an upright wooden or metal panel at the front of the body
and was a carry-over from the days of horsedrawn carrages
when the dashboard acted as a physical barrier, shielding
the carriage and its driver and occupants from the horse and
road splash.
