Expansion
Tank
An
expansion tank is a container that holds coolant and collects excess coolant when it heats up and
expands out of the vehicle's radiator. As the temperature of the coolant rises, the
pressure rises to a point at which the radiator cap allows
the coolant to escape through a small rubber tube, called
the overflow tube, into the expansion tank. As the engine
cools, after it is switched off, the most of the coolant in
the tank gradually returns to the radiator. If the expansion
needs regular filling with large amounts coolant, then there
is likely a leak somewhere in the system, a blockage in the
radiator, or a faulty radiator cap or water pump.
