Fender

A fender is the side panel of a vehicle which surrounds a
wheel well. Fenders (known as “wings” in the UK) protect other
parts of the bodywork and other road users from spray, dirt,
stones, and other debris thrown up by the rotating tires.
In early cars, fenders were closely contoured to the shape
of the wheel; the front ones, in particular, were separate
from the body and often turned with the wheels. Today, front
fenders remain identifiable on cars but have, in most cases,
become integrated into the overall body. Traditional type
front fenders are, however, important distinguishing features
of some makes such as Caterham, Morgan, and Jeep. Also there
has been a recent trend among car designers to give greater
prominence to fenders in an effort to imply a vehicle’s power
or accentuate its stance.
