Fluid
Coupling
Fluid
coupling, also called a fluid flywheel, a device for transmitting
torque between rotating shafts comprising an oil-filled case
connected to the drive shaft and with impeller vanes on the
inside, and an opposing turbine mounted on the driven. The
only coupling between these elements is by means of oil thrown
by the impeller against the turbine. Modified forms of this
device known as the fluid converter and the converter coupling
(torque converter) and including a third stator or reactor
element are used in the transmission of construction machinery
and automobiles respectively.
