Gasket

Gasket
A gasket is any thin compressible component which is positioned between two hard surfaces to create a perfect seal between the two. Gaskets can be found all over vehicles from the engine to the transmission and radiator. Most modern gaskets are formed from rubber however cork is also commonly used on older vehicles. Sometimes if a gasket has been in place for many years the two components it is between can become stuck together and a pry bar may be required to separate the two. When using a pry bar care should be taken not to damage or scratch the two surfaces as sealing them during reassembly may be difficult. It is good practice to use new gaskets when reassembling components after repair as they can often become damaged during separation. Faulty gaskets are one of the most common causes of oil, transmission fluid, and coolant leaks, and although the gaskets themselves are relatively inexpensive sometimes their replacement can be time consuming and labor intensive.
