Charles
Goodyear was the American inventor of the process of vulcanization
(patented 1844). In 1839 he bought the patents of Nathaniel
Manley Hayward (1808-1865), who had had some success by treating
rubber with sulfur. Working on this, Goodyear accidentally
dropped a rubber/sulfur mixture onto a hot stove, so discovering
vulcanization.
