Gudgeon Pin

A gudgeon pin is the mechanical link that hinges the piston to the connecting rod. Although simple in appearance, the gudgeon is a precision-engineered component that must be strong yet light, close-fitting yet with the freedom to move, and resistant to wear without causing scuffing. It is of hollow construction, typically made from fine-grained carbon steel of controlled hardness, and lapped to a mirror finish. Its diameter may be up to 40% of the piston diameter, so that the maximum bearing pressure in the piston does not exceed 55 MN/m2 (8250 lbf/in2). Types of gudgeon pin include semi-floating, fully-floating, and offset.
