High Intensity Discharge Headlight (HID)

A High Intensity Discharge Headlight (HID), also known as a xenon light, is a headlight that uses a quartz glass bulb containing xenon gas and halide salts to create a light about three times as bright as a halogen light.

Between the two electrodes of a high-intensity discharge (HID) light, a high voltage creates an arc which turns the gas in the bulb into a bright plasma (ionized gas) that shines with an intense bluish light. Standard on some vehicles and optional on others, HID headlights provide a brighter, more effective beam than traditional halogens, though they are much more expensive. On a few vehicles, the HID lights can move laterally in concert with the steering wheel to illuminate the road ahead even while cornering.
