Homologation
(race car)
Homologation
is a technical term, derived from the Greek homologos for
"agree," it is generally used in English to signify the granting
of approval by an official authority. In the automotive field
it refers to the manufacture of road legal vehicles specifically
built to allow a race spec version of the same vehicle to
compete in official race events. Usually vehicles made for
homologation purposes are built in limited numbers, often
just enough to comply with regulations. The 'GTO' abreviation
given to some vehicles names stands for 'Gran Turismo Omologato',
Italian for 'Grand Touring, Homologated'.
