Ignition
Coil

An ignition system component that converts the 12
volts received from the car battery to the much higher voltage (typically 20,000--30,000
volts) needed by a spark plug to create a spark and ignite the fuel/air mixture. The ignition coil is a form
of induction coil and essentially comprises two circuits.
In older cars, which use a distributor, the high voltage is conveyed from the
coil to the distributor and from the distributor the spark
plugs along high-tension (HT) leads. In modern cars, the ignition
is controlled electronically, by an engine control unit, and instead of a
single large coil, there are a number of smaller coils, either
one per spark plug or one serving two plugs.
