In-Line
Engine
An
engine configuration in which the pistons are arranged in a straight line. Commonly used
is the vertical inline configuration in which all the cylinders are cast or assembled in a line above a common
crankshaft. The majority of 4-cylinder engines, and
some 6-cylinder, are in-line. An in-line engine generally
costs less to manufacture than a V engine because the engine block is simpler to cast.
