Lockwasher

A lockwasher is designed to help prevent a nut working itself
loose through vibration. Because of the "broken circle"
design of a lockwasher and the fact one side sits higher than
the other this provides a minor friction force between the nut and the surface to which
it is bolted. Lockwashers are commonly used in a variety of
locations on cars and motorcycles due to the vibration caused
by the engine.
