MacPherson
Strut
A
MacPherson strut is a type of independent suspension unit
consisting of a coil spring inside a shock strut. The McPherson
strut suspension is widely used in modern vehicles up to the
midsize category, most commonly on the front, where it provides
a steering pivot as well as a suspension mount for the wheel,
but can also be used on the rear. Named after Earl S. MacPherson
who developed but did not invent the design, it is compact
yet provides a smooth, comfortable ride with good handling.
In the MacPherson suspension layout, the wheel is located
by a lateral control arm (usually a triangulated wishbone)
below wheel center by a suspension strut and an additional
tie rod. Lightweight, high-strength materials are used to
reduce unsprung mass to improve handling and ride.
