Octane
Number
The
octane number is a measure of the fuel's resistance to knocking
when it is burned in a spark-ignition engine. Specifically, it
is the percentage by volume of iso-octane (2,2,4-trimethylpentane)
in a blend with normal heptane that matches the knocking behavior
of the fuel being tested. Such tests are carried in a single-cylinder, variable compression ratio engine. A high octane
number indicates a high resistance to knocking.
