Pre-tensioner

A pre-tensioner is a device that, in the event of a collision, tightens the seat belt having being triggered by a gas generator or small pyrotechnic charge. When activated, the pretensioner tightens the webbing of the belt. Because the webbing is now tighter across the body, occupants participate earlier in the vehicle ride down. Consequently, loadings on the body are distributed more uniformly over the entire restraint sequence, and the risk of injury is reduced.
