Rack-and-Pinion
Steering
A
rack-and-pinion steering system consists of a pinion gear
on the end of the steering shaft (at the other end is the
steering wheel). This pinion works in conjunction with the
steering rack (which is essentially a flat bar with geared
teeth into which the pinion sits). A rack-and-pinion system
turns the rotational force transmitted by the driver through
the steering wheel into a side-to-side force which alters
the direction of the front wheels.
