Sequential Transmissions

In a sequential transmission the gears are accessed in a sequential order, 1 goes to 2, 2 goes to either 3 or back to 1, 3 goes to either 4 or back to 2, and so on...

Motorcycles usually have sequential transmissions (some have CVT transmissions). Sequential transmissions are often found in racing and high performance vehicles, but as the technology becomes cheaper sequential transmissions are becoming more and more common. Some of the benefits of a sequential transmission is that the chance of missing a gear or selecting the wrong gear is eliminated and a visual check of the current gear before changing up or down is not required. Also as the computer systems which control modern sequential transmissions become faster and faster, gear changes are becoming almost instantaneous.
