Spark-Ignition
(SI) Engine
A
spark-ignition (SI) engine is an internal combustion engine in which
the fuel mixture is ignited electrically. A spark-ignition
engine runs on an Otto cycle - most gasoline engines run on
a modified Otto cycle. This cycle uses a homogeneous air-fuel
mixture that is combined before it enters the combustion chamber.
Once in the combustion chamber, the mixture is compressed,
then ignited by a spark plug (spark ignition). The engine
is controlled by limiting the amount of air allowed inside
through the use of a throttling valve placed on the air intake (carburetor or throttle body).
