Spark
Plug

A spark plug is a ceramic-and-metal ignition system component
fitted in the cylinder head of an internal combustion engine.
It consists essentially of two electrodes separated by an
air gap. When the air/fuel mixture is fully compressed, a
high voltage (about 20,000 volts) is momentarily set up across
the electrodes, producing a spark that ignites the mixture.
The width of the gap between the two electrodes must be correctly
set for the engine to perform well. Today's cars can go about
25,000 miles between plug changes. However, replacing plugs
is often not as easy on modern cars as on older models and
it is sometimes preferable to have a mechanic do the job.
