Water
Pump

Driven by a belt connected to the engine (see auxiliary drive belt), this pumps coolant
from the base of the radiator into the engine and circulates it around the
cooling system. If the pump is faulty it will become noisy,
leak coolant, and, subsequently, the engine will begin to
overheat.
Internally, a water pump is simple, consisting of a shaft
connected to a series of blades. Water pumps older cars have
a lubrication or zerk fitting that needs to be greased occasionally.
Most recent cars have a sealed bearing on the shaft. Water
pumps most often fail because the shaft becomes worn.
A faulty water pump gasket or leaking bearing is one of the
primary sources of a coolant leak. See how
to identify car leaks.
