Easter Island in the Pacific Ocean is about 2,200 miles off
the coast of Chile, South America.
It is here that hundreds of ancient statues stand. On average
these mysterious sculptures stand 13 feet high and weigh around
14 tons. Although the largest rises 72 feet (21.6 metres) from
the ground and weighs around 170 metric tons.
Human heads-on-torsos carved from hardened volcanic ash, no
one really knows the significance of the nearly 900 giant 'moai'
that punctuate Easter Island's otherwise barren landscape. |
