The Gumball 3000 is an annual 3,000 mile road rally that takes
place on public roads. It is not a race as such, it is more
of a road trip adventure and there are no official prizes or
any official timekeeping.
The Gumball 3000 began in 1999 and each year a different continent
is the venue and a different 3,000 mile route is used. There
are usually around 120 entrants who mainly drive exotic sports
cars, however more unusual modes of transport, such as campervans,
have been seen.
Many celebrities take part in the event and there is usually
some police intervention - many participants have been fined,
had their cars confiscated or even been jailed for excessive
speeding!
The idea for the Gumball 3000 came from the famous Burt Reynolds
movie “Cannonball Run” and it is an opportunity for the super
rich to spend 6 days driving fast, partying hard and possibly
crashing their motors. |
