Audi's e-tron line of electric powered prototype vehicles
has just been expanded to include a new Audi
A1-based model called the Audi A1 e-tron.
20 examples of the Audi A1 e-tron will be tested in the
German city of Munich as part of a project developed by
Audi, E.ON, Stadtwerke Munchen and the Technical University
of Munich. 200 recharging stations, or as Audi put it;
"electric filling stations", will be built around
the city to provide the drivers with plenty of places
to top up the car's batteries.
All 20 examples of the Audi A1 e-tron will be on the roads
of Munich by mid-2011 as participants in the "eflott"
project, which forms part of the "Model Region Electromobility
Munich" initiative sponsored by the German government.
The electric drivetrain of the A1 e-tron provides around
102 horsepower, which is good for a top speed of 81 mph.
On battery power alone the car has a range of around 31
miles in slow moving city traffic. Of course that's not
much help if you need to get somewhere which is 20 miles
away - and then want to get home again. To alleviate this
range problem Audi has fitted the A1 e-tron with a very
small, single-rotor Wankel engine which acts as a generator
to top up the batteries with power. If the range extender
engine is used to recharge the battery, the A1 e-tron
can cover an additional 124 miles.
Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management at
AUDI AG, said of the A1 e-tron and the company's electric
car program: "Electromobility means more to us
than just electrifying conventional cars. Instead we are
dedicated to a holistic approach to all aspects of the
topic. We hope that this fleet trial will enable us to
gain broad insights into the behavior but also the expectations
of our customers regarding their dealings with electric
cars. Of course, the data that we will collect are another
aspect. This market and technology feedback will enable
us to further expand our expertise in electrification."
