The electric drivetrain was developed through a collaboration between Brabus and Tesla
The BRABUS Ultimate High Voltage is obviously based around the Smart Fortwo, a car Brabus has had previous experience in tuning - but usually to improve its performance credentials, not its green ones. First revealed at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show as a concept car named Smart Fortwo BRABUS Electric Drive the car came with limited details. But in September '09 Brabus revealed some extra information which helps explain what's going on underneath the bodywork.

The Brabus Ultimate High Voltage is Powered by a lithium-ion battery mounted under the floor and electric motors developed through a collaboration with Tesla Motors. Using this full electric power source the car can hit 62 mph (100 km/h) in 9.8 seconds - easily fast enough to keep pace with the common family car.

The performance is due to to a relatively light overall weight (electric cars always struggle with weight due to the heavy batteries) and an impressive peak torque figure of 280 Nm. And because it's coming from an electric motor all that torque is available from 0, yes 0, rpm.

To give the Ultimate High Voltage Concept a bark to go along with its bite Brabus have fitted the car with a speaker system which can simulate engine sounds similar to American V8 engines or racing cars.

The Brabus Ultimate High Voltage features a few exterior modifications to go with its new drivetrain including; LED daytime running lights, wider arches, new side skirts and 18-inch wheels with transparent Plexiglas covers - this is to improve the aerodynamics and increase efficiency.

The Interior, which for the concept was finished in white leather, features a special display monitor mounted in the center console for monitoring the drivetrain performance and remaining range.

Now that Brabus has taken the time to produce a second version of their electric powered Smart Fortwo based concept, there's an increased chance the company could move the vehicle from concept to production.
