road rage, 13th May 2011

Bus driver Matthew Smith earned himself a 12-month community
order to carry out 160 hours of unpaid work, an eight-week
curfew, an electronic tag, a 15-month driving ban, and
a surprisingly small £50 ($80) fine after a road
rage incident in Bath, England.
Smith was driving a replacement rail service coach, when
a driver blocked his path in an effort to stop the coach
so he could get his wife onboard just as it was leaving
the station. Understandably unimpressed by the other driver's
desperate antics, Smith decided to take it up a level
by exiting his coach, and after a fiery exchange of words
with the driver, he proceeded to reach into the car, let
off the handbrake and push it out of the way so he could
continue on.
Up to this point we're inclined have some sympathy for
both parties involved: Coach driver has a deadline, and
is peed off by a late passenger forcibly holding everyone
else up. Late passenger only needs to hold everyone up
for a split second while they hop on.
Unfortunately Smith's next move was not his proudest moment.
After returning to his coach he sped off in the direction
of a small group of pedestrians who were watching the
drama unfold. He clipped the backpack of one man who was
desperately trying to get out of the way. He then rubbed
salt into the wound by saluting the onlookers, and a policeman,
with a one-finger wave - we'll let you guess which finger
he chose.
Amazingly, the coach firm Smith worked for is seriously
considering rehiring him after his ban is complete. That's
after he's retaken his driving test, heavy goods vehicle
test, and coach driver's test.
