DS5 , 18th April 2011

At the 2011 Shanghai Auto Show Citroen revealed the third
model in their DS-line of more upmarket cars.
Called the DS5, the new model is the first Citroen to
be equipped with the HYbrid4 diesel hybrid drivetrain.
The HYbrid4 system produces 200bhp; offers four-wheel
drive capability; emission-free electric power for the
city; and an acceleration boost function for faster roads.
The styling of the DS5 was based on that of the Citroen
C-SportLounge concept from 2005. Arguably the C-Sportlounge
is the better looking car, however the DS5's lines fit
better with the rest of the DS range.
Viewed from the front, the large center grille, 'c' shaped
side intakes and oversized headlights dominate the design.
There's barely an inch of space on the bodywork forward
of the front wheels that isn't curved, shaped or somehow
adorned with complicated styling elements. It's fussy,
but good fussy.

The side view of the Citroen DS5
is much less complicated. However there's still plenty
going on - mainly thanks to the quirky style lines that
follow under the window frames. It looks a little like
the designer sketched it out while suffering from the
hiccups.

At the rear the Citroen DS5 displays a nicely proportioned
rump with stylish details. The extra-large tailpipes are
in contrast to the fuel efficient hybrid drivetrain beneath
the bodywork.

Inside, the driver-focused cockpit features a coupe-like
driving position with a flat-bottomed steering wheel and
a wide central console. All the buttons, switches, scroll
wheels and toggles are located on two central consoles,
one low down and one above the driver’s head - like in
an aircraft. A color Head-Up Display projects essential
information into windscreen in driver's line of sight.
