Proving that there is still a thimbleful of honor left in top level politics, MPs in the Houses of Parliment have criticised F1′s governing body for rescheduling the Bahrain race for October. The race is back on despite the violent crackdown on democracy protesters over the last few months, and the fact the Bahraini government has recently detained dozens of doctors and nurses whose only ‘crime’ was to provide medical aid to injured protesters. In a damming indictment of the total lack of morality on the part of the FIA, all 26 members voted in favor of reinstating the race.
The FIA was not only criticised by senior UK politicians, but also by the organisation which represents F1 teams (FOTA). The UK government is so incensed by the FIA’s lack of judgement that the subject was even debated during a session in the House of Commons.
Hopefully the FIA will see sense and reverse their decision. Or is this just the tip of the iceberg? Are the FIA going to invite Col Gadaffi over to present the winner with the champagne? Probably not, but you get the idea.
UPDATE: Bernie Ecclestone has now announced, thankfully, that the Bahrain F1 is off again. He told BBC Sport’s reporter Dan Roan: “Hopefully there’ll be peace and quiet and we can return in the future, but of course it’s not on.”
My faith in the basic good of humanity has been restored.
