When Bentley unveiled the second generation Continental GT Coupe last year, it was inevitable a restyled Continental GTC convertible was in the pipeline. Now it’s here, and it has all the same features as the coupe, the same power output, and (almost) the same performance numbers.
The 2012 Bentley Continental GTC coupe is powered by a 6.0 litre W12 engine which hoofs out 567 horsepower and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque. It provides enough grunt to allow the big convertible to get to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds (0.1 seconds slower than the coupe), and the top speed of 195 mph is just 3 mph off the coupe’s maximum speed.
The designers haven’t strayed from the appearance of the coupe, and the GTC is basically a carbon-copy, except for the obvious soft top roof. The tailored, multi-layered fabric hood is fitted with acoustic glass and under-body panels, for optimum noise isolation.
On the inside, Bentley’s designers and craftsmen have equipped the car with a new, even more spacious and sumptuous hand-crafted cabin than its predecessor. It features soft-touch leather upholstery, a range of wood veneers and metal trim, and soft, thick carpets. There is a choice of 17 different leather colors and 7 wood veneers.
Like the coupe, the new Continental GTC features a wider track, sharper steering and re-calibrated suspension when compared to the first generation car. The advanced all-wheel-drive system now splits the torque 40:60 with a rear wheel bias (the original was split 50:50). This change helps minimize understeer during hard cornering, while still retaining the sure-footedness which comes from an AWD layout.
