Whoever says messing around with RC cars isn’t fun, clearly has no sense of joy left in their life. There’s something about the way you can live out your stuntman fantasies in 1:10 scale which makes them so appealing. Getting a few of them together, and setting up an impromptu off-road race through the back garden is one of the cheaper and more childishly enjoyable ways to kill a couple of hours on a weekend. But there’s nothing childish about the new Traxxas X0-1. In fact they won’t sell it to anyone under the age of 16! Not that many 16 year-olds will have the required $1,099 Traxxas are asking for it. Whereas most RC cars are the sort of thing you can get out for an hour or so, do your thing, and then put it away again for days or even weeks, the Traxxas X0-1 is meant for the sort of person who clocks up more miles in miniature than behind the wheel of a real car.
However the Traxxas X0-1′s real claim to fame is the fact it’s the fastest ready-to-run radio controlled car in the world. Straight out of the box it can do 100+ mph, and the 0-60 time of 2.3 seconds is faster than almost every single production supercar on the planet!
But the Traxxas X0-1 isn’t just about putting the biggest electric motor possible into an RC car. It is about that too. But it also has an extremely advanced 2.4GHz radio system with an iPhone dock for relaying telemetry on the car, and also providing on-the-fly tuning potential. The system works by using the Traxxas Link App, the phone’s screen then provides an intuitive, high-definition, full-color graphical display and interface. The Traxxas Link software displays real-time data such as speed, RPM, temperature, and battery voltage.
The phone ‘dashboard’ is fully customizable with either dial or digital readout gauges. Up to nine gauges can be displayed at once. You can use the recording function to document your dashboard view, with sound, so that you can keep your eyes on your driving and not miss a single apex. If you forget to record, simply touch Instant Replay anytime to capture the previous minute. The recordings can be named, saved, and shared with others.
At 27 inches (68 cm) long and 12 inches (30 cm) wide, the Traxxas X0-1 is a bit of a beast. The 1:7 scale makes it noticeably larger than most hobby RC cars. But this extra size also helps make it more stable at the extreme speeds it’s capable of. The body was designed using computer modeling techniques to make sure it was aerodynamic and provided plenty of downforce. The XO-1 is the first off-the-shelf RC car to feature a fully developed and functional air-management system.
The chassis of the X0-1 is made from 3mm thick aluminium, which should help in the event of a crash. Although it’s probably not going to cope too well if you barrel it into a brick wall at 100 mph! Many of the drivetrain and steering components are also precision machined out of aluminium to provide a balance between high strength and low weight.
Basically everything about the Traxxas X0-1 is supercar, just scaled down.
