2013 BMW M6

2013 BMW M6 coupe

BMW has just begun ordering shiny new ‘M6′ badges to fit on the back of their all-new 2013 M6 coupes and convertibles. The 2013 BMW M6 is based on the third-generation 6-Series – a car which has been in service since last year. The M6 coupe and convertible will make their world debuts at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show in March, before making their US debuts at the New York Auto Show in April.

Like any good ‘M’ car, a world-class engine is essential. It’s comforting to hear then that the same 4.4 litre twin-turbo V8 used in the new M5 is being fitted in the new M6. This engine produces 560 horsepower from 5,750 rpm, and 502 lb-ft (680Nm) of torque from 1,500 rpm – 5,750 rpm. A seven-speed M-Double Clutch Transmission (M-DCT) routes the power through an Active M Differential to the rear wheels. Both the M6 Coupe and Convertible do the all-important 0-62 mph (100km/h) sprint in 4.2 seconds, and both cars are as standard electronically limited to 155 mph. But if that’s not enough, you can pay a little bit extra for the M Driver’s package and BMW will let your car stretch its legs all the way up to 189 mph.

Amazingly, despite the 10 per cent rise in power, and massive 30 per cent torque increase, the fuel economy of the new M6 is roughly 30 per cent better than its predecessor. Part of that is due to the more advanced engine, while the other part is due to some weight saving components, like the carbon fiber roof, and aluminium hood and doors. Don’t be fooled though, the 2013 M6 is still no lightweight sports car – weighing in at 1,850 kgs (4,078 lbs) for the coupe, and 1,980kg (4,365 pounds) for the convertible.

Other notable features of the 2013 BMW M6 include an M-specific Servotronic speed-sensitive power steering system with three settings, an upgraded standard braking system with larger rotors and six piston calipers at the front, or optionally carbon-ceramic brakes which are available with the 20-inch wheel package.

Visually, the BMW M6 is set apart from the standard car by a fairly discreet aero package which consists of 30mm (1.2 inch) wider wheel arches, a new front bumper with larger air intakes, deeper side skirts, and a new rear bumper which houses a small air diffusor and four chrome-tipped exhausts.

On the inside, the new BMW M6 is fitted with an M-branded steering wheel, instrument cluster and shifter, as well as sports seats and upgraded trim pieces.
