Now that both the Cayman and Boxster have been comprehensively made over, there is a question which may trouble many soon-to-be Porsche owners. Cayman or Boxster? While the two cars are incredibly alike in many ways, they are more than just the hardtop and convertible equivalents of each other. Each has a distinct character and appeal which draw in buyers for different reasons.

So, lets say the decision is yours. You have the choice between a brand-new equally specced Cayman or Boxster, which would you go for? And just to take money out of the equation whatever difference there is in price is handed to you in folding money.

Quick recap.

Base Porsche Cayman: 275 hp, 0-60 mph in 5.4 seconds, top speed 165 mph, price $52,600.

2014 Porsche Cayman

Upsides:
Stiffer chassis offering better dynamics. Has a tiny bit more power.
Downsides: Well it doesn’t have a convertible roof does it. Slightly more expensive.

Base Porsche Boxster: 265 hp, 0-60 mph in 5.5 seconds, top speed 164 mph, price $49,500.

2013 Porsche Boxster

Upsides:
Convertible roof. Cheaper – leaving you $3,100 to spend on what you like.
Downsides: Fractionally less power. Less dynamic chassis.

  1. Whatta choice – haven’t had a Porsche since my flawed-but-faithful 911 SC many years ago.

    These days my wheels are a Boardman CX bike, which I can carry in my VW Transporter.

    So how to decide on the two-seater choice here?

    Easy actually – it has to be the open-top in this gloomified English climate.

    One glimpse of the sun and that Boxter’s roof would be down in a flash.
