Volkswagen Amarok Power-Pickup Concept

VW Amarok Power-Pickup concept

This year’s Worthersee event saw several VW, Audi and SEAT concept cars unveiled. But by far the most practical vehicle on show surely has to be the Volkswagen Amarok Power-Pickup Concept, which is, obviously, based on an Amarok single cab pickup.

The Volkswagen Amarock Power-Pickup Concept is powered by a 3.0 litre V6 turbocharged diesel engine. It produces 272 horsepower and 442 lb-ft (600 Nm) of torque. Enough to scoot the pickup to 62 mph in 7.9 seconds, and tow small mountains. Just not at the same time. The transmission is an 8-speed automatic unit mated to a permanent 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system.

Volkswagen CrossBlue Coupe Concept

Volkswagen CrossBlue Coupe

Earlier this year Volkswagen treated visitors to the Detroit Auto Show with the spectacle of a large SUV concept in the form of the Volkswagen CrossBlue concept. Now they’ve followed it up at the Shanghai Motor Show with a related concept called the CrossBlue Coupe concept. However whereas the original CrossBlue was a hybrid-powered, practically-minded, sensible SUV, the CrossBlue Coupe is a bit more sporty. It’s still a hybrid, but it has more power and a smidgen more style.

The Volkswagen CrossBlue Coupe is a five-seater crossover with a wider and lower stance than its the original CrossBlue SUV concept. Sadly, as is normal for auto makers nowadays, the PR folks have conveniently forgotten what the word “Coupe” means, and wrongly labeled the concept as such. Probably in a misguided effort to make it sound more desirable than it really is.

Mercedes-Benz GLA Concept

Mercedes-Benz GLA concept

At this year’s Shanghai Motor Show (April 21 to 29), Mercedes-Benz will be showing off a premium-class SUV concept in the form of the Mercedes-Benz GLA. The GLA Concept showcases a number of the company’s latest advances in lighting, and some new styling features. It even shoots laser beams from its eyes! But more on that later.

Dr Joachim Schmidt, Executive Vice President Mercedes-Benz Cars, Sales and Marketing, said of the vehicle: “The Concept GLA marks a new approach for us in the compact SUV segment – this is a sporty and more coupe-like evolution of this category of vehicle. The Concept GLA is a compact SUV that combines its sporting spirit with the all-round qualities of a tough, leisure-time companion. ‘Escape the everyday’ is the message that this car conveys to its driver. It also makes clear the further potential of our compact vehicle architecture, which provides the basis for the A- and B-Class models that led the German market in their respective segments in the first quarter of 2013.”

Shelby Raptor

Shelby Raptor

The Ford SVT Raptor is already one of the most, if not the most, capable off-the-shelf production pickup trucks in the world. But if its 411 horsepower, fancy suspension system and numerous other off-road performance items just doesn’t make the grade. Then A, you’re clearly very hard to please. And B, you need to contact Shelby American.

Shelby take the already over-the-top SVT Raptor, and add a massive supercharger to the 6.2 litre V8 engine, bolt on a performance exhaust system, and all of a sudden there’s 575 horsepower being channeled to all four wheels through the vehicle’s six-speed automatic transmission.

Mercedes-Benz G 63 AMG 6×6

Mercedes-Benz G 63 AMG 6x6

Have you ever felt that some vehicles try just too hard to be awesome. The Mercedes-Benz G 63 AMG 6×6 might just fall into that category. But don’t let it find out you think that, or it’ll grind you into the desert sands like a tyrannical dung beetle.

Everything about the G 63 AMG 6×6 screams excess. But that should go down well with its intended clients, and judging by the official AMG photos – which show the vehicle tearing up the sand dunes of Dubai while camels look on with indifference – it’s pretty obvious who those clients are.

Powering the Mercedes-Benz G 63 AMG 6×6 is a 5.5 litre twin-turbocharged engine which puts out 544 horsepower and 560 lb-ft (760 Nm) of torque. The power is channeled through an AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission to all six wheels. The drive system is derived from a 6×6 version which was developed by Mercedes-Benz for the Australian army.

All-new Range Rover Sport to debut in New York

2014 Range Rover Sport

Land Rover are taking to the streets of New York on the 26th March to unveil the all-new Range Rover Sport. Instead of waiting until the 2013 New York Auto Show – which starts the day after – Range Rover are going to debut the car during a public drive through Manhattan. New York was chosen as the hosts for the car’s debut debut in recognition of the fact more Range Rover Sports are sold in New York than any other metropolitan area in the world, and the model is North America’s best-selling Land Rover product.

The all-new Range Rover Sport is the latest addition to the new Range Rover family of vehicles and the third Range Rover model to be launched in two years.

Italdesign Giugiaro Parcour Concept

Italdesign Giugiaro Parcour

Italdesign Giugiaro surprised everyone at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show by showing up with a bizarre off-road supercar concept called the Parcour. The Parcour is a two-seater vehicle powered by a 5.2 litre Lamborghini V10 which channels 550 horsepower to all four wheels, allowing for a 0-62 mph (100km/h) time of just 3.6 seconds, and a top speed in the region of 200 mph.

Key to the Italdesign Giugiaro Parcour’s versatility and performance is a dial on the dashboard which is used to select the four different drive modes: Comfort, for a relaxed drive suited to city settings; Off-‐Road for off-‐road driving; Ice for winter conditions with poor road grip and lastly Sport, to unleash the full 550 horsepower. The electronic system adjusts the damping, ride height, and the engine setup.

Subaru VIZIV Concept

Subaru Viziv

At the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, Subaru took took the opportunity to reveal their latest concept car. Called the VIZIV, the concept is a next-generation crossover that represents the design direction Subaru will be following in the future. The name “VIZIV” is derived from the phrase “Vision for Innovation”.

In terms of style the Subaru VIZIV isn’t ground breaking, but it is quite a sharp looking concept nonetheless. It’s sporty yet rugged in appearance, and with just a single door on either side there’s very little to interrupt the car’s smooth lines. It also has quite a low roofline which accentuates its powerful appearance and gives it a coupe-like profile.

Mitsubishi GR-HEV Concept

Mitsubishi GR-HEV

Mitsubishi’s other 2013 Geneva Motor Show concept, to accompany the CA-MiEV, is this, the GR-HEV. The Mitsubishi GR-HEV is a sport utility truck which was developed as a conceptual successor to the one-ton Mitsubishi pickup – which has been around since 1978.

It’s proportions are odd to say the least. The rear cargo area juts out from the back of the truck at a bizarre angle and quite frankly looks terrible. Almost everything about the GR-HEV looks awkward and misaligned. Mitsubishi have even had the audacity to fit it with 3-spoke wheels. Which haven’t looked good since… Well, never.

However the styling of the Mitsubishi GR-HEV is only half the story. As it’s really the drivetrain where Mitsubishi’s drones have spent most of their time and energy.

2014 Jeep Cherokee

2014 Jeep Cherokee

Ugly has a new poster boy. And it’s this, the 2014 Jeep Cherokee. Clearly out of an intense desire to set the all-new Cherokee apart from the competition, Jeep’s designers have admirably tried to come up with some thing a bit different. Well they’ve certainly succeeded in their mission. Sadly for all the wrong reasons.

The front is where the real problems lie. Front and center is the trademark Jeep grille – which has been awkwardly folded back about half-way up, slitty little headlights which make it look half asleep, a second set of headlights beneath which look like an afterthought, and on the lower level it looks like Jeep have raided the Kia parts bin for their bottom grille.
