SEAT Formula 1430 Concept

Seat Formula 1430 Concept

The SEAT Formula 1430 is a race car concept conjured up by the Barcelona-based design studio designcube. The concept was inspired by the 1970s SEAT single-seat race cars which tore up the Spanish circuits in the one-make Formula Nacional (later called the Formula 1430) race series.

The original cars were small, lightweight, and powered by the 1.5 litre engine from the SEAT 1430 sedan. And by the looks of it designcube’s concept adheres to the original brief. Albeit with another seat for a passenger/co-driver.

Top Ten Movies for the Car Enthusiast

Top Ten car movies

There’s little time left before the sixth installment of the Fast and Furious franchise opens in theaters worldwide (around 23-24 May, but folks in UK do get an advanced premiere on May 7th). So we thought this would be a good time to see what movies might delight gear heads on a slow moving Sunday afternoon. So, old and new, good or bad, these are the car movies we consider the best to get the gasoline flowing through your veins while waiting for Fast & Furious 6, Rush and the first Need For Speed movie.

Syrena Sport

Syrena Sport

The original FSO Syrena Sport was a prototype sports cars designed and built in the late ’50s by the Polish automotive company FSO. The car was a two seat, fiberglass bodied convertible powered by a 0.7 litre 4-stroke, 2-cylinder air-cooled engine. It wasn’t quick, at all, having only 35 horsepower to play with. But it was surprisingly good looking for such a budget sports car. probably because the styling was partially inspired by Ferrari models of the time.

Fast forward to today, and a small group of Syrena Sport enthusiasts based in Poland have decided to develop a spiritual successor to the original prototype. Their car uses the same name. But that’s where the similarities end. The new Syrena Sport features a Nissan 370Z-sourced 3.7 litre V6 mounted up front, with the power being sent to the rear wheels. Two states of tune are being offered, either a naturally aspirated 330 horsepower version, or a turbocharged 450 horsepower version.

Audi TT ultra quattro concept

Audi TT ultra quattro concept

At this year’s Wothersee festival, an annual event which celebrates everything VW/Audi, Audi will be presenting a one-off high-performance version of the TT.

However the Audi TT ultra quattro concept’s most impressive feature is not something it’s gained, but something it’s lost. 300 kgs (661 lbs) to be precise. Audi’s engineers have managed this through extensive use of carbon fiber, fiberglass and magnesium.

It’s been a pretty strict diet too. With few areas escaping the engineers scrutiny. Yet surprisingly the car looks remarkably standard from the outside, and comfortable and well equipped on the inside. There’s air conditioning, electric windows, and even a digital display to show what’s going on behind thanks to the two small cameras which replace the standard side mirrors.

Renault Sport Twizy F1 Concept

Renault Sport Twizy F1

Y’know that F1-inspired, electric powered concept car Renault teased earlier this week. Well it turns out it’s not a concept car. It’s a Renault Twizy with loads of go-faster goodies bolted on, and a Renault Sport F1 paint job.

The Renault Sport Twizy F1 Concept isn’t just an exercise in absurdity though. It also showcases Renault’s latest F1-derived Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS), which allows the driver to call on a significant boost in power for a limited duration. In the Twizy F1 it raises the power output by a factor of six! Although sadly it only lasts 13 seconds. When it’s engaged the Twizy F1 can out-accelerate most other cars on the road in the 0-60 mph sprint. Managing to accomplish the feat in around 6 seconds.

Video: This guy’s bike is bigger than yours

Stoopid Tall bicycle

It’s not often bicycles make their way onto this website. But in extreme cases I’m prepared to make exceptions. Like the Monsterbike, this contraption – suitably called Stoopid Tall – is one man’s bizarre idea of what a bicycle should be.

Stoopid Tall is the work of Richie Trimble, who brought his 14.5 foot (4.4 metre) death trap along to the Ciclavia event in downtown Los Angeles last weekend.

OSS Designs Audi RS5

OSS Designs Audi RS5

OSS Designs has just unveiled their latest project car. It’s the company’s first go at tuning an Audi, and judging by what they’ve done, lets hope they do some more. The OSS Designs Audi RS5 has a kinda retro-ish ’80s Audi Quattro feel to it. I don’t think that was intentional, but either way. It works.

Up front is a blacked out grille and headlight surround, giving the car a particularly infuriated look. The headlights themselves feature OSS Designs’ multicolor LED surround which can be adjusted from inside the car. The new look of the car continues down the side with modified sideskirts and large lateral intakes just ahead of the rear wheels. At the rear is a new bumper and a massive duck tail spoiler.

50 Years of Lamborghini – A brief history

Lamborghini 50th Anniversary

As all of you who watch the latest and greatest unfold here on diseno-art.com already know, 2013 is a very special year for a certain Italian manufacturer. Yes, it’s Lamborghini’s 50th Anniversary, and during the 15th Shanghai International Automobile Exhibition they unveiled a special edition model to mark the occasion.

As I’m talking about Lamborghini and the Aventador LP720-4 50th Anniversario , I also decided to take a walk down memory lane and revisit some of the milestones in the history of one of the most important supercar manufacturers in the world.

Toyota ME.WE Concept

Toyota ME.WE

While most of the automotive world has been focused on the Shanghai Motor Show for the past week, Toyota has been busily preparing an all-new concept car for a Paris debut on the Champs Elysees. The Toyota ME.WE is a stripped down, back-to-basics concept designed to be economical, versatile and environmentally friendly.

It’s been tough picking through the vast swathes of BS Toyota decided to spout on about in their press release regarding the car. But the gist of it is that the car was designed from the ground up to be lightweight and modular in construction, so it could be quickly and easily adapted to different needs. It’s a bit like a Citroen 2CV for the 21st century. Right down to the fact the rear bench seat can be removed entirely and used for outdoor seating.

Icona Vulcano

Icona Vulcano

One of the Shanghai Motor Show’s star attractions this year had to be this, the Icona Vulcano. It was designed by Icona, an Italian design firm based in Shanghai. The development of the Vulcano’s drivetrain was overseen by Claudio Lombardi, a former powertrain technical director of Ferrari.

Icona have a bit of history with the Shanghai event. In 2011 they unveiled the Fuselage concept, an aerodynamic electric-powered, four-seat sedan concept car. Due to the positive reaction this concept received worldwide, the company decided to have a go at a two-seat supercar.

Right from the start it was decided that the Vulcano would use a front engine layout. Samuel Chuffart, Design Director of Icona explains how the concept developed; “As different ideas came together, the most challenging design issue which we faced was how to create a balance between power and beauty. When you’re trying to create a feeling of aesthetic harmony, you risk creating too many sweet lines, which decreases the feeling of power. On the other hand, if you make too much of the powerful features which are necessary to a super sports car such as its cooling cutouts and blades which manage the air flow, they become graphically too dominant, and this makes the car less beautiful. The way we found the right balance was usually by looking for the greatest simplicity”.
