It’s been long awaited, long expected, and captured in dozens of spy photographs over the past few months and years, but finally the next-generation 911 is upon us. The car will make its public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, in the form of the 911 Carrera and Carrera S.

The new generation 911, designated the 991, is lighter, more powerful, and more economical than its predecessor. But as always, the styling has undergone a mild evolution instead of a major revolution – despite the new car not sharing a single body panel or styling detail with the retiring model. Everything Porsche’s designers have done have given the car a more sporty and modern character. In particular the blended driving lights/grille assembly of the front bumper look especially contemporary. But slightly longer, lower stance of the car is what will stand out when the two generations are side-by-side.

All-new 2012 Porsche 911 gets its first official video outing

Porsche is set to unveil the anticipated 2012 Porsche 911 at the Frankfurt Motor Show this September. It is an all-new car, and one which replaces the current 997 version which has been around since 2005. As always, Porsche likes to play it safe with the 911, and although there are plenty of changes, none of them alter the overall character of the car. It’s still a 911, and everyone with at least one functioning eye will instantly recognize it as such.

That said, the new 911, which may go under the official designation of 991, does have a considerably more sleek profile than its predecessor. It retains similar oval headlights to those which were brought back by 997, but the rakish lines are fractionally more akin to those of the 996. Despite being bigger and roomier than the current 911, the new car also promises to be lighter.
