1980s cars disappearing from British roads faster than any other decade

classic cars disappearing

That headline probably isn’t all that surprising to anyone with eyes. Which I’m assuming is most of you seeing as you’re reading this. The 1980s was a pretty disastrous decade for the automobile the world over. In the US car design had almost completely stagnated, with the big three pretty much living on the fact most buyers of the time wouldn’t consider anything that wasn’t ‘Merican made. In the UK quality control had become laughable, with the workers in the automotive industry spending most of the previous decade  either on strike, or in the breakroom demanding more tea breaks.

Today what that means is that 1980s cars are (thankfully) headed to the junk yard at a faster rate than any other generation of automobiles. In a study conducted by the British motoring website honestjohn.co.uk, they discovered that out of the many vehicles which had been produced in the hundreds of thousands, or even millions, in that decade, there were some which were now down to their last couple hundred.

Honestjohn have put together a list of the top 20 fastest dissapearing family cars in the UK. Unsurprisingly almost every single one of them is from a British manufacturer. But just to make sure the story ends on a high note, they’ve also complied a list of the top 10 classic survivors…

Vote: Classic Face-Off – Really Stupidly Expensive Edition

Ferrari versus Aston Martin

Classic face-off is a feature where we show you a couple of similarly priced classic cars from the same era, and you vote for the one you find most appealing.

This is truly a Titan’s endeavor, as we are today pitting against each other two very rare and remarkably beautiful cars, that are well prepared to go under the auctioneer’s hammer and grab astonishing amounts of cash – if you ask us, somewhere north of the $2 million mark. So, this is not the usual vote about which one would best suit your garage, as the cars featured today are at the pinnacle of automotive style and of course, cost.

Vote: Classic Face-Off – VW Beetle based WTFs

VW kit cars

Classic face-off is a feature where we show you a couple of similarly priced classic cars from the same era, and you vote for the one you find most appealing.

The humble and ubiquitous Volkswagen Beetle is one of the most commonly used donor vehicles for kitcar builders. In this round of Classic Face-Off you’ve got the choice of two Beetle-based vehicles. But despite their identical origins, they’ve ended up as two very different lumps of fiberglass and metal. The only thing they have in common is that almost every one who sees them says “wtf?”

Vote: Classic Face-Off – Little Red Cars Edition

Karmann Ghia vs Sunbeam Alpine

Classic face-off is a feature where we show you a couple of similarly priced classic cars from the same era, and you vote for the one you find most appealing.

Today’s light-hearted competion features a couple of European cars, one German, and one British. Both are characterful little vehicles, and both display shiny red paintwork. But from there on out the two start to go their own separate ways. One is a hardtop, the other a drop top. One has the engine up front, the other has it tucked in the back. One looks almost concourse, the other has had some noticable modernisation.

Vote: Classic Face-Off – British Bruisers

Jaguar XJS and Jensen-Interceptor

Classic face-off is a feature where we show you a couple of similarly priced classic cars from the same era, and you vote for the one you find most appealing.

Today we have a couple of large, heavy so-called “sports cars” which hail from the UK.  Neither is lacking in cylinders or displacement. But that’s about all they have in common. One is ready to go and appears to be in good condition. The other is going to require some (considerable) work. One is fairly common and won’t turn too many heads. The other is a bit of an oddity and should garner a few respectful nods from those in the know. One is red. The other one isn’t.

Vote: Classic Face-Off – Barracuda v 911

Plymouth Barracuda and Porsche 911

Classic face-off is a feature where we show you a couple of similarly priced classic cars from the same era, and you vote for the one you find most appealing.

Despite both being two-door coupes, both being from the late sixties, and both having plenty of style, today’s contenders in Classic Face-Off couldn’t be more different. One is sleek, lightweight and German. While the other is bold, brash and all-American. One thing they do however have in common is that the both need restoration work. And lots of it.

Vote: Classic Face-Off – BMW 635 CSI vs Mercedes SL

BMW 6 Series and Mercedes-Benz SL

Classic face-off is a feature where we show you a couple of similarly priced classic cars from the same era, and you vote for the one you find most appealing.

This round of Classic Face-Off sees a pair of luxury German sports tourers going head-to-head. On the one hand you’ve got the elegant Mercedes SL, and on the other hand you’ve got the more thuggish-looking BMW 635 CSI.

Back in the ’80s they were both a sign you’d arrived. But which one has outstayed its welcome?

Vote: Classic Face-Off – Lancia Fulvia vs Alfa Romeo GTAm

Lancia and Alfa Romeo

Classic face-off is a feature where we show you a couple of similarly priced classic cars from the same era, and you vote for the one you find most appealing.

Today’s classic face-off has a undeniable Italian twist. And that’s because we’ve got a 1967 Lancia Fulvia Coupe 1.3 Ralley Coupe going up against a 1971 Alfa Romeo GTAm. But despite being almost identical in size and layout they have two very distinct characters.

Photo Gallery: Cuba’s Yank Tanks

Cuban Chevrolet Yank Tank

In this exclusive photo gallery featured on diseno-art.com, we explore some of the vehicles from that most famous of Caribbean islands, Cuba.

As everyone knows, Cuba is a curious country seemingly trapped in a 1960s time warp. In 1962, when America put the island under a strict embargo following the Cuban revolution, the population were prevented from buying any new cars, or parts, from their closest automobile-producing neighbor.

This has resulted in the island becoming home to the most eclectic assortment of vehicles on the planet. It is a world where all-American 1950s Chevrolets are powered by Russian-made diesel engines, and where nearly-new Peugeot 206s sit side-by-side with tired looking Desotos.

‘Half-restored’ 1967 Toronado brings new meaning to the word

half-restored 1967 Oldsmobile Toronado

Precision Restorations of St. Louis, Missouri have performed a unique ‘ restoration’ on a 1967 Oldsmobile Toronado. The car was actually completed last year, but oddly this is the first time we’ve heard of it. It took over a year to turn what was a reasonably intact but dilapidated Toronado into the bizarre mix of old and new you’re looking at.
