The Nissan Amenio which was unveiled to the public at the 2005 Tokyo Motor Show was a preview of the next generation Nissan Elgrand MPV.

The design of the Amenio clearly separates the bodywork from the glasshouse. And while the overall shape of the vehicle was reasonably production feasible, features like the glass roof and curvaceous bodylines around the wheel arches were either eliminated or toned down on the production model.

Inside the Amenio concept had room for six, and was bright and cheerfully decorated. Shocking red seats and a mixture of cream and brown fabrics were used to upholster the interior, while aluminium and rosewood were used for the trim elements.

A central dash monitor served up a variety of information including navigation and local information. This screen also displayed a rather ridiculous 'earth-browsing' feature which let the user look down on vehicles from space!

Nissan Amenio press release:
The Amenio is a six-passenger, multipurpose people carrier that takes Nissan's Modern Living concept to a new level. The Amenio is targeted at users who need a vehicle for their own individual needs but also place a high priority on flexibility. The interior is about tranquillity; the exterior is all about dynamism. This sharp contrast means the Amenio is a multipurpose people carrier that proposes a new direction in minivan philosophy.

Interior
The grid-like pattern on the roof allows plenty of outside light to enter the cabin through the glass area. Sliding doors are fitted on both rear seat sides, and the elimination of the B-pillars creates large openings for effortless entry and exit.

Combining distinctively smooth leather seat covering with graphically patterned armrests, the passenger seats capture the form and functionality of lounge chairs. Similar to aircraft seats, the front passenger and second-row seats slide and recline electronically in addition to offering stowaway leg rests.

While the interior design is based on a contemporary expression with global appeal, it retains the element of Japanese design. The surface of the instrument panel combines rosewood, a well-known element of Japanese traditional architecture, and the telematics interface gives an impression of state-of-the-art technology.

Exterior
The exterior projects dynamic performance - in sharp contrast to the relaxing living-room like feel of the interior.

The ends of the front and rear bumpers feature vertical lamps. This abrupt truncation of the soft surface treatment creates a contrast that accentuates the exterior design.

The sporty feeling comes from the smooth, flowing silhouette, the front fender treatment that dynamically links front and the sides, and the flare of the rear fenders. Also contributing to the car's sporty looks are the 20-inch wheels.
