The XL1000V Varadero is Honda's answer to the likes of the BMW R1200GS and Triumph Tiger. The trailbike styling belies the more road orientated engineering underneath. Long travel suspension is the only real 'off road' characteristics of the Varadero.

The XL1000V is powered by a retuned VTR1000F Firestorm engine. The engine is fitted with smaller carburetors giving a lower power curve than the Firestorm.

The chassis of the Varadero comprises of a steel tube cantilever frame, aluminium swingarm and conventional front forks.

In 2003 the Varadero received an extensive overhaul resulting in improved fuel economy courtesy of a fuel injection system, a sixth gear. Cosmetic changes included new, more voluptuous bodywork and a revised dashboard.
