When
Porsche originally introduced the 928 it was intended as a range
topping grand tourer which Porsche hoped might replace the 911.
However, as time showed, the 911 won out and the 928 was instead
a temporary addition to the lineup.
Power for the Porsche 928 came from an all-new 4.5 litre V8
mounted up front, a break from the norm for Porsche, this was
mated to either an automatic or manual RWD transmission.
The top-spec Porsche 928 GTS which was introduced in 1992 was
a faster, more powerful version of the 928, its engine was a
5.4 litre V8 developing 350 bhp. Other changes for the 928 GTS
included a restyled nose and tail, electronic limited slip differential,
sports suspension and wider wheels.
In total the Porsche 928 was in production for 18 years.
