When you think of Range Rover's you generally think of giant
lumbering mechanical beasts which are very good at going over
and through rough terrain, while at the same time keeping the
occupants enclosed in a little bubble of luxury and comfort.
Well for the all-new Range Rover Evoque those two character
traits have been toned down just a little bit. It still looks
like a Range Rover, but this vehicle is a bit more timid when
it comes to going off-road.
It's the first Range Rover model ever to come with a 2WD option,
and it's also the most fuel efficient model the company has
ever produced. In fact almost everything about the Evoque is
smaller, lighter and cheaper than it's stable mates like the
Range Rover and Range
Rover Sport.
The styling of the vehicle is closely based on that of the LRX
concept car from 2008. Thankfully most of the features which
made the LRX a crowd pleaser, have been integrated into the
Evoque's overall design.
The Evoque is intended to be sold all over the world, in over
160 different countries. So this is a massively important vehicle
for the company as a whole. Hopefully if they can get a good
balance between affordable and luxury - without skimping on
the important stuff - they'll be onto a winner.
Here's what Range Rover have to say about the Evoque themselves:
The Range Rover Evoque is a bold new evolution of classic Range
Rover design cues.
Its dynamic profile, with a dramatic rising beltline, muscular
shoulders and a distinctive taper of the floating roofline,
seems to draw the eye towards it, giving Range Rover Evoque
a natural authority and magnetism.
Inside, the contemporary, spacious architecture is combined
with premium luxury design and materials. The dramatic slope
of the centre console and the pure, elegant horizontal lines
of the instrument panel draw from classic Range Rover models.
While the quality and craftsmanship of materials is highlighted
by the clean feel of the interior surfaces. Subtle ambient lighting,
using the latest LED technology, can be colour-adjusted to match
your mood. To enhance the sense of space and freedom, you have
the option of a dramatic, full glass panoramic roof.
Comfort
Slide behind the wheel and you’ll find the interior is every
inch a true Range Rover, with a distinctive contemporary design
that blends sporting integrity and intuitive technology. Soft
leather, polished woods and subtle chrome detailing have been
carefully selected and designed to premium standards, and produce
an ambience of true desirable luxury.
Performance
Range Rover Evoque delivers a combination of dynamic and sporty
handling with a refined, responsive performance. Whether you're
driving in the city or enjoying its effortless off-road performance,
you'll find its intuitive engineering responds to your driving
style.
Off-Road
Range Rover Evoque is the ultimate urban vehicle. However, there’s
no compromise to the legendary Range Rover command in all weather
and on all surfaces. Unique technologies, such as Terrain Response,
Hill Descent Control, Gradient Release Control and Hill Start
Assist ensure the vehicle can perform on any surface, and in
all conditions.
Dynamic on-road performance
The engaging and sporty driving dynamics of Range Rover Evoque
mark an evolution of Range Rover DNA. Plus, the lighter weight
and more compact footprint offer you quicker responses and and
agility. Despite this dynamic on-road character, the all new
compact Range Rover Evoque stays true to Range Rover’s legendary
off-road performance as well.
Powertrain
There's a choice of powerful, refined engines available. The
state-of-the-art turbocharged 240PS 2.0-litre petrol Si4 4-cylinder
engine combines the economy of a 4-cylinder with the performance
and refinement normally expected from a six cylinder. Diesel
models feature the latest 2.2-litre turbo diesel engines, including
a 150PS TD4 and a 190PS SD4 which delivers a remarkably potent
performance with impressive torque.
Dimensions
Range Rover Evoque's compact footprint and sleek design help
to minimise weight and improve aerodynamic performance, while
delivering sporty, agile handling. The compact size also allows
it to benefit from lightweight, four-cylinder turbocharged petrol
and diesel engines, which combine superior performance with
Range Rover's lowest CO2 emissions to date. The most efficient
version will deliver an exceptional performance of less than
130g/km.
Construction
To reduce weight and improve fuel efficiency, Range Rover Evoque
uses the most advanced lightweight materials. Aluminium, magnesium
and titanium components contribute towards its carbon-efficient
footprint. Carefully designed to maximise the use of more sustainable
manufacturing materials, each vehicle uses 16kg of recycled
plastic and 21kg of natural and renewable materials. Electric
power-assisted steering (EPAS) also contributes to making Range
Rover Evoque the most sustainable Range Rover ever by significantly
reducing fuel consumption. And by eliminating the wasted energy
in a conventional power steering system, EPAS further reduces
CO2 emissions.
