BMW M3 GTR Street Version

The BMW M3 GTR was powered by a V8 as opposed to the straight 6 which powered the regular BMW M3. Only 10 street legal M3 GTR's were produced for homologation purposes to enter the American Le Mans Series (ALMS). The asking price for one of the 10 street legal BMW M3 GTR's was a stratospheric $218,000 ( £120,000).

However homologation rules were later rewritten, requiring 100 street cars and 1000 engines to be produced. Because of this BMW decided to withdraw the M3 GTR from the ALMS, and therefore axed the M3 GTR altogether.

Some unofficial M3 GTRs have been built by private individuals and tuning companies alike. The modification is achieved by removing the M3's standard inline 6-cylinder and shoehorning in a 4.0 litre V8.

In popular culture, the E46 BMW M3 GTR makes an apearance in the video games Need for Speed: Most Wanted and Carbon.
