Strange vehicles: Subaru WRX STI TRAX

Subaru WRX STI TRAX

The Subaru WRX STI TRAX is an outrageous vehicle which was displayed at the 2009 SEMA Show in Las Vegas. The car was built for DC Shoes cofounder and SRT USA driver Ken Block by Vermont SportsCar.

Based on a Subaru WRX STI the TRAX features a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine (with a MOTEC M800 ECU) that produces around 400 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. The transmission is handled by a 5-speed close-ratio dog-engagement gearbox and the Subaru programmable DCCD (Driver Controlled Center Differential) all-wheel drive system.

With the exception of the Mattracks rubber track system, the vehicle is rally-prepared and similar in specification Block's #43 SRT USA competition Subaru STI. Except whereas the rally model is fully prepared to take on dirt, gravel, and asphalt; the TRAX model is setup to handle snow and ice. Kind of like the TH!NK Frost concept.

Major differences from the stock STI include the addition of lightweight carbon/Kevlar RECARO SPA ProRacer competition seats with the Head and Neck Restraint System (HANS), carbon fiber door panels and an onboard fire suppression system.
