A bench vice is a medium sized vice - larger than a hobby vice, but smaller than some industrial vices - which can be used to hold objects or materials securely in place during work.

Most bench vices come as standard with solid metal jaws. These can easily damage fragile materials. However there are rubber inserts which are available. These prevent damage while still securely holding objects in place.

In order to be effective a bench vice should be securely attached to a sturdy (preferably immovable) work bench.
